The Hirschmann Industrial Wireless LAN access point, BAT54-Rail, gets a new feature set by a software update, wich will improve the network security and roaming functionality.
When operating in client mode, the BAT54-Rail is now able to authenticate as 802.1x supplicant at a 802.1x server. This functionality corresponds to highest possible security level as described by the standard IEEE 802.11i. So the BAT54-Rail is currently the only device in the market supporting this feature.
With the new feature “Background scanning” the roaming functionality of the BAT54-Rail is improved. This is especially supported by the new feature called background scanning. Clients now search for access points with better connection and change to it more quickly.
Background scanning is additionally used to find unknown access points or clients. Using WLANmonitor the list of found devices is shown on the screen. The network administrator gets a better overview on his network. He is now enabled to classify the devices as ‚rogue’ or ‚friendly’ and receives hints where the unknown device can be found.
The new software package contains the new firmware version 6.22 and the Windows management tools called LANconfig, LANmonitor and WLANmonitor. It is available for download from the Hirschmann homepage . An addendum of the reference manual, to be found in chapter A, describes the new features in detail.
