In order to improve the service for passengers further and to make operating processes even more efficient, Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB) decided to introduce new, state-of-the-art systems for customer information, video monitoring and counting passengers that are based on an open, flexible Ethernet infrastructure. One partner for this project is Hirschmann. The wagons will be linked via HIPER-Ring and IP67 switches.
The "SBB vehicle applications" program combines the following applications on a technical platform as an open solution:
Hirschmann's job is to provide the necessary communication infrastructure for these applications inside the trains based on fast Ethernet. Ascom (Schweiz) AG is the contractor for both the double-decker commuter trains and the modernised lowered floor commuter trains projects and will be the main contractor for ZUKO (train communication for DPZ's) and multimedia bus (MPZ). The communication infrastructure will enable additional applications to be integrated easily at a
later date. The open platform must be able to be used both for regional and long distance vehicles.
